Winooski, VT — Today, Democratic Candidate for Governor James Ehlers joined UVM Medical Center nurses’ call for a fair contract following their vote to authorize a strike should it become necessary, and urged UVMMC to deliver such a contract before July 9.
“As the UVM Medical Center nurses voted 94% to 6% to strike, I stand with nurses in their quest for a dignified contract with a fair process. Investing adequately in our nurses also improves outcomes for patients who need care—but right now, Vermont ranks among the lowest in the U.S. in nurse compensation when adjusted for cost of living. The overwhelming vote to strike happened despite nurses not having the opportunity to vote on their contract on the premises, an unjust decision by UVMMC that made voting less accessible. I urge the UVM Medical Center to deliver a fair contract by July 9 that includes the necessary safety, pay and quality of life to protect nurses’ rights and the well-being of patients.”
