Winooski, VT — The Vermont State Labor Council AFL-CIO proudly endorsed James Ehlers for Vermont governor today, citing his powerful commitment to fairness and justice for all Vermonters. The Vermont State Labor Council AFL-CIO sought to get involved early in the gubernatorial primary process because of the strength of support for James Ehlers and his advocacy for the rights of working people. This is the second major labor endorsement the Ehlers campaign has received: The Vermont Building & Construction Trades Council also endorsed this week.
James Ehlers said, “All Vermonters have the right to the economic justice that unions champion. Unions fought for the basic rights that we now take for granted. As governor, I will stand with unions and fight the attacks on labor so that all working people in our state can rise. United we win.”
Jill Charbonneau, President of the Vermont AFL-CIO said, “James Ehlers is a born leader. His genuine interest in working Vermonters is not only refreshing but in stark contrast to the current administration. Vermonters will be well served by Ehlers’ commitment and understanding of the undertow of the current economic prosperity being experienced by corporations and Vermont’s highest-income households.”
Ehlers added, “Coming from a union family and seeing firsthand the power of workers organizing together, there is no greater honor than receiving a union endorsement. The AFL-CIO has been championing economic justice for more than fifty years, and I’m humbled to have their backing to be a governor for the people.”
Ehlers affirmed that as governor he would support pro-worker policies like paid family leave, raising the minimum wage, the right to collective bargaining and healthcare for all.
The Vermont State Labor Council AFL-CIO is one of nearly 500 state and local labor councils of the AFL-CIO, democratically elected bodies dedicated to represent the interests of working people at the state and local level. The AFL-CIO mobilizes its members and community partners to advocate for social and economic justice and strives daily to vanquish oppression and make communities better for all people—regardless of race, color, gender, religion, age, sexual orientation, or ethnic or national origin.
